Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau went all in on attacking independent media platforms, calling them “conspiracy theorists” who undermine the mainstream media.
Trudeau announced his long-promised legislation to protect Canadians against the so-called online harm, which is due next week.
During a news conference in Edmonton on Wednesday, Trudeau said the “harms bill” would be “focused on protecting children.”
“Kids are vulnerable online to hatred, to violence, to being bullied, to seeing and being affected by terrible things online,” said Trudeau.
“We need to do a better job as a society of protecting our kids online the way we protect them in schoolyards, in our communities, in our homes across the country.”
The Montreal Gazette reported:
The upcoming legislation is now expected to pave the way for a new ombudsperson to field public concerns about online content, as well as a new regulatory role that would oversee the conduct of internet platforms.
The new positions would be established as a part of the forthcoming bill, which the government had hoped to unveil by April, said one senior official with knowledge of the plan.
“It’s very nearly ready to go,” said the source, who has seen a draft of the legislation. The source spoke on condition of anonymity in order to discuss details that have yet to be made public.
The source said the bill proposes “two very narrow instances of a takedown” of online material: images of child sexual abuse and the non-consensual sharing of images.
Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre blasted the forthcoming ‘online harms legislation,’ a bill, saying he won’t accept Trudeau’s ‘woke authoritarian agenda.’
He added that his government shouldn’t be deciding what constitutes ‘hate.’
Trudeau described the need for speech censorship, telling reporters, “There is a deliberate undermining of the mainstream media” by “conspiracy theorists.”
However, Trudeau is no stranger to conspiracy theories.
Last November, Trudeau was accused of pushing Hamas “propaganda” over reports Israel is killing women, children, and babies.
As The Daily Fetched reported:
Trudeau called on Israel to “exercise maximum restraint” during a news conference on Tuesday.
The Canadian PM warned Netanyahu that the “world is watching” as the country fights against Hamas terrorists in Gaza.
“We’re hearing the testimonies of doctors, family members, survivors, kids who have lost their parents,” Trudeau said.
“The world is witnessing this killing of women, of children, of babies. This has to stop.”
However, Trudeau fell short of making the moral and legal distinction between Hamas attacks on Israeli civilians and Palestinian deaths that occurred as a result of Israel’s response, the Times of Israel reported.
