The Biden administration’s Health and Human Services (HHS) department is offering a whopping $1.7 million in grants to groups promoting family “acceptance” of LGBT youth.
The Biden administration will pay the groups $425,000 a year for programs that help LGBT youth avoid rejection by their families and connect them to counseling to help accept them.
The program would be via the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).
The program aims to “prevent health and behavioral health risks” like depression, suicide, homelessness, drug use, and HIV and “promote well-being for LGBTQI+ youth in the context of their families/caregivers, cultures, and communities,” according to the SAMHSA page.
“Research has shown that LGBTQI+ youth are at greater risk for poor behavioral health outcomes than their cisgender, heterosexual counterparts,” the grant application materials read.
The grant application materials also cite a survey from The Trevor Project. This transgender activist group found that LGBT youth with “high social support” reported fewer suicide attempts than those with “low or moderate social support.”
“Yet, fewer than 1 in 3 transgender and nonbinary youth found their home to be gender-affirming,” the materials add.
“Negative parental reactions related to sexual orientation are associated with increases in substance use, including alcohol, marijuana, and cigarettes, as well as a higher risk of suicidal ideation.”
Transgender activists argue that parents who refuse to affirm their child’s new gender identity are putting the child at risk of suicide,
Activists also push parents to allow their children access to puberty blockers, gender surgeries, and cross-sex hormones.
All of which is not entirely reversible.
Grant recipients must be able to connect youth and their families with counseling and refer youth with mental health disorders to community providers.
Groups must also develop an “evidence-based family counseling intervention” to “promote family acceptance” of LGBT youth and “prevent behaviors associated with family rejection of the LGBTQI+ youth that can lead to mental health and substance use conditions.”
The groups must also establish an LGBT “advisory workgroup,” including LGBT activists and counselors.
Groups awarded the grant can use social media to promote the message that family rejection of their LGBT child can lead to suicide.
As we’ve previously reported, the Biden administration strongly favors allowing children to access transgender medical interventions.
President Biden called on HHS to increase access to transgender medical treatments last year.
He also called to fight against red states blocking children’s access to such treatments.
“My message to all the young people: Just be you,” Biden said at the time.
