A Swiss journalist has been jailed for two months for calling a left-wing activist a “fat lesbian.”
Alain Soral critiqued Catherine Macherel as a “queer activist,” describing her as “unhinged,” including calling her a “fat lesbian.”
A court in Lausanne, Switzerland, jailed Soral for 60 days for the “crimes” of “defamation, discrimination and incitement to hatred.”
The comments were posted on a video on social media several years ago, WND reports.
Macherel is a writer and journalist for Swiss newspapers Tribune de Geneve and 24 Heures.
“This court decision is an important moment for justice and rights of LGBTQI people in Switzerland,” boasted Murial Waeger of an activist organization promoting lesbianism.
“The conviction of Alain Soral is a strong signal that homophobic hatred cannot be tolerated in our society.
Soral was also ordered to pay thousands of Swiss francs in penalties for the comments.
Soral’s lawyer slammed the conviction for a “crime of opinion.”
He said the case aimed to probe whether a person had “sinned against the dogmas of a single thought.”
However, the layer said Soral plans to appeal to the European Court of Human Rights.
Swiss law now makes it illegal to discriminate against people based on sexual orientation.
Meanwhile, Multiple US jurisdictions have already placed schemes to make it “illegal” to criticize, or “discriminate against” someone based on gender identity.
One such case came after 16-year-old Abbigail Wheeler was removed from her local YMCA swim team for daring to point out she has a biological male in the women’s locker room.
Waeger said the verdict represented a milestone in the application of a measure approved by Swiss voters in 2020 that made it illegal to discriminate against people based on sexual orientation, AP reports.
This isn’t the first conviction against Soral for words that ‘offended’ someone’s gender identity.
In 2019, he was repeatedly convicted in France for denying the Holocaust, which is a crime in France, and was sentenced to jail.
