President Donald Trump reacted to the news that Senator Mitt Romney would not seek reelection, declaring it “FANTASTIC NEWS FOR AMERICA,THE GREAT STATE OF UTAH, & FOR THE REPUBLICAN PARTY.”
On announcing his exit, Romney said he felt he would be less effective in a second term.
Trump later took to Truth Social to scold Romney after his decision not to seek reelection:
“FANTASTIC NEWS FOR AMERICA,THE GREAT STATE OF UTAH, & FOR THE REPUBLICAN PARTY. MITT ROMNEY, SOMETIMES REFERRED TO AS PIERRE DELECTO, WILL NOT BE SEEKING A SECOND TERM IN THE U.S. SENATE, WHERE HE DID NOT SERVE WITH DISTINCTION.
A BIG PRIMARY FIGHT AGAINST HIM WAS IN THE OFFING, BUT NOW THAT WILL NOT BE NECESSARY. CONGRATS TO ALL. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!” Trump posted.
Romney has been critical of Trump in recent years and urged the GOP to move on from the former president,
“I hope the jury of the American people reaches the same conclusion about Donald Trump,” Romney said.
“He just is not suited to be president of the United States and to be the person who we hold up to our children and the world as the leader of the free world,” he added.
“At some point when the people who work with you, your cabinet secretaries, and juries conclude that you’ve done something severely wrong, it’s time for us to recognize that the great majority of those who’ve worked with him is right, and he’s wrong,” he continued.
Romney became the first senator to vote to convict Trump from his own party in an impeachment trial.
The RINO Senator also voted to convict during Trump’s second trial following the Capitol riot on Jan. 6, 2021.
More recently, Romney praised Biden for sending billions in taxpayer dollars to Ukraine, calling it “the best national defense spending I think we’ve ever done.”
The Senator claimed that a “very small amount” of money being sent to Ukraine (Over $200 Billion) is somehow benefitting all Americans.
“The single most important thing we can do to strengthen ourselves relative to China is to see Russia defeated in Ukraine,” Mitt Romney said.
“Being able to take an amount which equals what about 5 percent of our military budget, but actually less than 5 percent of our military budget each year to help the Ukrainians, is about the best national defense spending I think we’ve ever done,” Romney claimed.
