Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg filed a federal lawsuit against Rep. Jim Jordan over the Republican’s inquiry into the Donald Trump indictment, calling it a “transparent campaign to intimidate and attack” him.
Bragg is asking a judge to invalidate subpoenas that Jordan, the chair of the House Judiciary Committee, has as part of the investigation of Bragg’s dubious handling of the Trump case.
As CBC reports:
In recent weeks, the Judiciary Committee issued a subpoena seeking testimony from a former prosecutor, Mark Pomerantz, who previously oversaw the Trump investigation. The committee has also sought documents and testimony about the case from Bragg and his office. Bragg has rejected those requests.
The House Judiciary Committee is scheduled to hold a hearing in Manhattan on Monday on crime in New York City and what it alleges are Bragg’s “pro-crime, anti-victim” policies.
However, the District Attorney’s office claimed violent crime in Manhattan has dropped since Bragg took office despite 17 murders in Manhattan this year compared to 12 last year.
But despite minimal improvements over last year in some areas of the city, on the whole, New York City continues to see appalling rates of violent crime.
Bragg, in his lawsuit, said he’s taking legal action “in response to an unprecedentedly brazen and unconstitutional attack by members of Congress on an ongoing New York State criminal prosecution and investigation of former President Donald J. Trump.”
As The Daily Fetched reported earlier:
A spokesperson for Bragg reacted angrily to the crime hearing calling it a “political stunt,” adding the Democrats would not “engage in actual efforts to increase public safety.”
The committee’s hearing will center on Bragg’s political targeting of Donald Trump while being “soft on crime” in his city.
Judiciary Committee ranking member Rep. Jerry Nadler shared Bragg’s statement while condemning Jim Jordan.
“New Yorkers don’t need to take public safety advice from Jim Jordan, whose ‘tough on crime’ solution is to defund the DOJ and FBI,” Nadler wrote.
