Donors and supporters of Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis are beginning to ask whether the potential 2024 Republican presidential candidate should run next against Donald Trump, or wait until 2028.
A recent NBC News report noted how DeSantis supporters are having second thoughts about the governor’s potential 2024 bid.
According to the report, Donors and supporters alike believe the main issue for Ron DeSantis is taking on former president Donald Trump.
The outlet reports:
At a Sunday luncheon following the annual Red Cross ball in Palm Beach, Florida, a group of 16 prominent Republicans, described by one attendee as a mix of DeSantis backers and Trump “skeptics,” discussed misgivings about the governor’s standing for the future if he tussles with the former president.
One attendee told the outlet that DeSantis’s future would fair better without facing Trump directly this election cycle.
“He will get scarred up” by the former president, the attendee said.
Then there is the growing hesitancy among some of DeSantis’s backers, including conservative billionaire shipping goods magnate Richard Uihlein” who recently gave half a million in contributions to DeSantis’s reelection campaign.
The report from NBC News, citing a source “familiar with the strategy” around their spending, said: “The brakes are pumped” due to DeSantis’s dropping status in polls.
Meanwhile, Trump has continued to grow, garnering 50 percent or more as DeSantis appears to lose momentum despite Trump’s forthcoming indictment.
Two days after Trump announced his suspicion of a coming arrest, DeSantis cleared he was “not going to be involved” with a “manufactured circus by some Soros [backed] DA.’
Recent polls show that Trump enjoyed a boost as DeSantis’s figures dropped or remained stagnant.
A recent Harvard/Harris survey found Trump leading the hypothetical 2024 GOP primary field by 26 points over DeSantis.
This week’s Morning Consult survey was no different, with Trump expanding his leader to +28 percent over DeSantis.
One individual, described as a “Republican campaign operative who speaks to donors regularly,” said DeSantis may have peaked, assigning the Florida governor’s response to Trump’s possible indictment as “telling about how far behind the eight-ball” he is.
“DeSantis is doing a book tour. He’s barnstorming the country, and his polls are going down,” another strategist stated.
“It’s just not a good look for DeSantis,” the individual added.
Another donor admitted DeSantis could not “ignore” Trump too much longer.
However, DeSantis broke his silence on his potential 2024 presidential run last week, criticizing Trump publicly.
“I also think just in terms of my approach to leadership,” DeSantis said, appearing to slam Trump.
The notion that DeSantis won’t stand a chance against Trump is nothing new.
Last year, former Fox News anchor Megyn Kelly dismissed the chances of Florida Governor Ron DeSantis beating Trump in 2024.
“I just don’t think anybody else could win if Trump runs,” the former Fox host said.
“I think Trump sucks up all the energy in every room no matter what. And even someone as skilled as a politician and smart policy-wise as DeSantis can’t overcome that. Do you really think the hardcore Maga is gonna abandon Trump for DeSantis? They’re not,” Kelly said.
