The days of CNN being an influential news network are becoming a distant memory as the outlet craters under its most appalling ratings not seen in decades.
According to a Fox News report citing Nielsen Media Research, the “Clinton News Network” has a major problem with its advertiser-coveted demographics.
Advertisers preffer viewers in the 25-54 demographic, mainly because that age group is likely to have disposable income.
However, CNN averaged just 84,000 viewers in that age range during their prime-time hours.
It’s only a matter of time before advertisers start jumping ship.
The last time the network had a prime-time 25-54 audience this low was the week of Sept. 30, 1991.
NN averaged 80,000 viewers in the key demographic, well below Fox New’s average of 150,000 viewers.
It’s a bleak picture all around for CNN.
Fox News is currently on top at almost 2 million primetime viewers, while CNN came in at just 21st with an average of 383,000 viewers.
In the coveted 25-54 age range, CNN was 33rd among basic cable networks.
CNN has been scrambling to rebrand itself from the anti-Trump echo chamber, and even used its 9 p.m. slot for news foused offerings.
As The New York Times noted, Anderson Cooper’s 8 p.m. program only managed an average audience of 584,000 viewers, while the 9 p.m. slot managed just 407,000 – a 30 percent drop.
As AdWeek noted:
CNN had a poor ratings week. In fact, the network averaged its smallest Adults 25-54 audience in primetime in roughly three decades (84,000 viewers).
The network dropped four spots to No. 17 in total primetime viewers, drawing a 383,000 total viewer average. The network also dropped to No. 5 in total day viewing with a 395,000 viewer average. It’s rare for a cable news network to average more viewers in total day than in primetime, but that’s what happened this past week. CNN remained No. 33 in primetime Adults 25-54, posting the aforementioned 84,000 viewer average in the daypart. That’s tied with Paramount Network. The network fell three spots to No. 18 in the total day demo, averaging 80,000 viewers from the measurement this past week.
CNN is rapidly becoming a laughing stock.
Secretary of State Antony Blinken made fun of the network at a recent Gridiron Club dinner in Washington, the Times noted.
“According to the guest list, there are 600 attendees here tonight. CNN would kill for an audience like that,” he said.
However, CNN told the Times it is focused on journalism, not ratings.
“We’ve been openly experimenting with a variety of programming directions over the past few weeks. Without an established format, cadence or promotion for that hour, the network has focused exclusively on producing smart and meaningful content — not on ratings,” the statement said.
“But man, they are getting a lot wrong while the ratings appear damned to irrelevance,” Kyle Koster wrote Friday on The Big Lead.
“Even when CNN was a punching bag and target for the right, it was in the conversation. Now it feels as though people don’t even glance up from their devices at the airport to see what segment they’re doing on mute,” Koster said.
“Getting something out of the 9 p.m. slot with ad hoc specials that are announced mere days before and playing musical chairs does not seem to be a winning strategy,” he wrote. “There are years and years of learned behavior that a specific anchor is going to be there for cable news’ most competitive hour that must be unlearned.
“At some point, maybe one starts to wonder if asking everyone to unlearn it has a higher chance of succeeding than finding a suitable permanent replacement for Chris Cuomo.”

CNN – Clown News Network
oooh. openly experimenting. cadence. oooh.
except news programs show car chases for hours if the excitement lasts. there is almost nothing newsworthy about a car chase. nothing, really.
but these supposed ‘public service news’ programs are all about ratings, not news. they hold interesting bits until last, seeking to keep us hooked. they tease with tidbits of weather then smilingly look forward to seeing us again later in the program.
the talking heads spew word-for-word leftist propaganda.
so the whole thing’s a fraud to begin with.
I like the way the lefties of CNN are lying. it’s so natural. it’s like blue sky and sunshine: so comforting to always be there.
CNN will try to build viewership by quadrupling their output of lies and propaganda! LOL!
I guess no one told them if you find yourself in a hole to quit digging
In the immortal words of Gordon Ramsey…SHUT IT DOWN!!!
Chris Licht is realky doing a bang up job for the discovery channel owners….NOT.
I watched cnn for a time. I was staying in Playa del Carmen in Mexico. This one bar had something like a 20′ satellite dish. They showed cnn for an hour at lunch time. Probably 35+ years ago. Haven’t watch since.
Not much interest in created news. As in Created News Network.
Send ALL of the “tech” people home, maybe they can learn to “code”, like I was told after my work was “sent overseas” for my “safety” after 9/11….(had to intern at a PBS tv/fm station to get my FCC broadcast engineering license-that was REALLY expensive!) all for naught now, as I’m an old “boomer” white (not really, parents were born BEFORE Pearl Harbor). The “forgotten” working generation that GAVE you all of “this” <——————->, all of the politician’s money, all the tech, and digital.
