Biden officials successfully pressured the fact-checking website Snopes to revise and change its fact check regarding a prospective federal ban on gas stoves.
In an email to White House assistant press secretary Michael Kikukawa, Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) communications director Pamela Rucker Springs boasted about her “tough letter’ to the Snopes writer.
“Sent over tough letter to this writer yesterday when the initial claim was rated as ‘mixed,'” she said, linking to an updated fact check.
Kikukawa praised the change as “so helpful.”
Snopes had assigned a “mixture” rating to claims that the Biden administration was contemplating a ban on gas-powered stoves.
Statements by Richard Trumka Jr., a member of CPSC, also influenced the report.
Trumka Jr. said a ban was “on the table,” adding that the PSC was weighing regulations “drastically reducing emissions or banning gas stoves entirely.”
But Snopes downplayed Trumka Jr.’s pronouncements and changed its fact check rating to “false” after receiving an email from the Biden regime.
Watchdog group the Functional Government Initiative (FGI) revealed the process of how Biden arranged the changes by securing emails between CPSC and White House communications officials.
“A commissioner appointed by President Biden wanted to ban gas stoves, and he got caught, provoking a public outcry,” commented FGI spokesman Peter McGinnis.
“So, the CPSC staff leaned on Snopes, seeking to counter the narrative… And the White House finds this ‘helpful.’ Helpful with what?” he questioned.
“This goes beyond dysfunction — the government using sympathetic media to censor inconvenient news.”
It seems the Biden administration is now weaponizing fact-checkers to try and discredit Republicans
Last year, Sen. Tom Cotton responded to the New York gas stove ban, emphasizing that the left’s push to ban gas stoves was not a “right-wing conspiracy” after all.
“New York is banning gas stoves. Just like the Biden Administration tried to do before they got caught,” the senator said, adding, “So much for a right-wing conspiracy!”
This would have allowed the Biden regime to jump and discredit Cotton’s remarks.
New York moved to ban the use of natural gas in new constructions last year through the state’s $229 billion budget deal.
The Wall Street Journal reported:
“One of the legislation’s most noticeable effects would be an end to gas stoves in new homes, along with other gas-powered appliances such as water heaters, furnaces, and clothes dryers.”
