The district attorney investigating the brutal murder of CashApp founder Bob Lee in San Francisco has accused Elon Musk of making the crime-riddled city look bad with “irresponsible statements.”
You would think that a DA in the middle of a high-profile murder investigation would have better things to do than attack the Twitter CEO.
After Elon Musk gave his condolences to the CashApp founder after news of the murder broke last week, were he pointed out that many people he knew in the Bay Area have become victims of assault.
“Violent crime in SF is horrific and even if attackers are caught, they are often released immediately,” Musk, calling on the city’s DA to do more.
While announcing the arrest of a suspect connected to the stabbing death of Bob Lee, San Francisco DA Brooke Jenkins focused on Elon Musk, slamming his comments following the news of the murder.
Not long after San Francisco Police Chief Bill Scott confirmed the suspect was 38-year-old Nima Momeni, Jenkins focused on the Tesla founder’s tweets.
“While we’re not going to release any additional facts at this time, I must point out that reckless and irresponsible statements like those contained in Mr. Musk’s tweet that assumed incorrect circumstances about Mr. Lee’s death serve to mislead the world in their perceptions of San Francisco and also negatively impact the pursuit of justice for victims of crime as it spreads misinformation at a time when the police are trying to solve a very difficult case,” she said.
So what did Musk do wrong?
All the billionaire did was highlight that some of his friends had been violently assaulted in San Francisco, warning the city was unsafe.
But Jenkins didn’t appear to like Musk’s comments, despite the city seeing a 33 percent increase in homicides year over year.
While the overall crime rates have fallen in the city, that is likely due to less serious crimes not being reported because of a lack of enforcement. If you get mugged in San Francisco, it is pointless calling he police anymore.
While the man arrested in connection to the murder knew Lee, showing it wasn’t a random street attack, it still doesn’t say anything positive about the level of safety in San Francisco.
