Dr. Anthony Fauci said allegations against him for covering up the true origins of the COVID pandemic are “politically motivated” by Trump supporters.
The former chief medical advisor claimed he was “not comfortable” contracting then-President Donald Trump on his public statements.
Fauci is facing accusations of trying to obscure the U.S. funding of the Wuhan Institute of Virology after he previously testified America did not finance research to enhance viruses in a lab.
Although Fauci blames Trump supporters for pushing the allegations, the mounting evidence is becoming undeniable.
The news comes after two U.S. intelligence agencies said COVID-19 resulted from a mishap in a Chinese lab.
Republicans on the coronavirus pandemic subcommittee accused Fauci of orchestrating the publication of a scientific paper that suggested against the lab leak theory.
Meanwhile, GOP senator for Kentucky Rand Paul said Fauci was responsible for “an elaborate cover-up,” claiming he had undertaken as “ultimately he would have culpability.”
In December, Paul said Fauci was directly responsible for the deaths of millions of people by funding dangerous research.
Paul said Fauci funded “research that allowed them to create super viruses, that in all likelihood leaked into the public and caused seven million people to die.”
“This is right up there with decisions, some of them malevolent or military to kill millions of people,” The Senator added.
Fauci also claimed Trump was “saying things that were just not true” in reference to a statement about the malaria drug hydroxychloroquine to prevent COVID.
“I was not comfortable in having to get up and contradict the President of the United States, because I have a great deal of respect for the office of the presidency,” Fauci said.
“But I had to do that—and that triggered a degree of hostility in which I became a target and it’s gotten worse and worse.”
Fauci’s remarks come days after Judiciary Committee chair Jim Jordan announced he was “building the case” to issue criminal referrals against Fauci for lying to Congress about ‘gain of function.’
“We could do a referral potentially,” Jim Jordan said.
“I would, frankly, prefer just to have Dr. Fauci come back in and take another round of questions here, but we’re building the case. You know, like, we had Dr. Redfield testify last week, Chairman Wenstrup did. I thought he was — I thought he was great. As were the other witnesses that were brought in.”
