Minnesota-Duluth's Reed Ryan, 22, Dies after Suffering Cardiac Arrest

Former football player for Minnesota-Duluth University, Reed Ryan, died on Tuesday after suffering a cardiac arrest following a workout; he was 22.

According to Ryan’s family, he died from cardiac arrest, resulting from “an undetected genetic heart condition.”

The training team gave Ryan CPR before he was rushed to St. Mary’s-Duluth ICU.

Tragically, Reed Ryan sadly passed away despite efforts to save him.

“There’s been a lot of misinformation that we wanted to make sure that we had our team involved in kind of what was going on,” Wiese shared at a news conference on Wednesday inside the UMD Hall of Fame room.

“So at that point, with our team, we had talked to all of those guys and our staff and support staff and everybody to make sure that we were all on the same page … that the outcome probably was not going to be positive at that point.”

“He was (an organ) donor, and I think that’s something that he and his family are very proud of last night as they did the donor walk at Essentia,” Wiese said, referring to a scene in which hospital staff line the corridors as a transplant donor is wheeled into the operating room, Duluth News Tribune reported.

Ryan’s obituary read:

“Reed had a contagious smile and lived life to the fullest in short years.”

“Reed loved people; he could talk to anyone and prided himself on being surrounded by friends, family, mentors, and being part of a team.”

“He created his own online vintage store-Thrifted Tiger, loved to travel, collecting shoes, drawing, going to concerts, and cooking.”

“Yeah, that was really tough,” said Bison safety Sam Jung, who came to NDSU in 2020.

“Reed was a great guy, a great friend. We were pretty close and it’s really hard to deal with. He put a ton into the program and he had four great years here and he would do anything for anybody on this team.”

Reed made the transfer to Minnesota-Duluth following four years with North Dakota State University.

Fox News reported that Reed won two NCAA Division I AA FCS national championships.

Reed played a total of nine games and racked up eight combined tackles, which led to a whopping loss of 10 yards.

He also helped the Bulldogs defense lead the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference in lowest average yards allowed per game.
