The transgender child of Massachusetts Democratic Rep. Katherine Clark has avoided jail after being arrested and charged with assaulting a police officer in January.
The biological male named Riley Dowell, whose birth name was Jared, was sentenced only to a year of probation, WFXT reported.
According to the Boston Globe, the light sentencing comes amid a deal with prosecutors that Riley’s case will be dropped if all the requirements are completed, a Suffolk County Judge said on Wednesday.
“[t]he case against [Dowell] will be considered resolved if [he] completes her probation, which requires 30 hours of community service, an apology letter to the officer, and paying back the city for the cost of cleaning up her graffiti,” the outlet reported.
The letter of apology has already been written, according to WBTS.
Clark describes Dowell as “non-binary” and refers to him as “Riley” and “my daughter.”
The media also described Dowell as Clark’s daughter.
“I love Riley, and this is a very difficult time in the cycle of joy and pain in parenting,” the Massachusetts congresswoman said.
“This will be evaluated by the legal system, and I am confident in that process.”
The incident occurred close to the Parkman Bandstand Monument, a police news release said at the time.
Powell was defacing the monument by spray-painting anti-police slogans “NO COP CITY” and “ACAB,” which stands for “All Cops Are Bast**ds.”
When Dowell was arrested, “a group of about 20 protesters began to surround officers while screaming profanities though megaphones on the public street, causing traffic to come to a standstill,” the release said.
“While interfering with the arrest of Jared Dowell, a police officer was hit in the face and could be seen bleeding from the nose and mouth,” the release added.
The Democrat’s transgender daughter faced charges of assaulting a police officer by means of a dangerous weapon, damage of property by graffiti, and destruction or injury of personal property, police said.
The Boston protest supported one in Atlanta, where radical leftist demonstrators torched a police car and vandalized local businesses.
Clark herself had been arrested outside the Supreme Court building during an anti-abortion protest when she refused to stop blocking a street.
