Starbucks Manager Who Was Fired for Being White Gets Additional $2.7 Million in Damages

A Starbucks manager who was fired for being white and previously awarded $25 million for wrongful termination has now been awarded an additional $2.7 million in damages.

In 2018, Shannon Phillips was fired after baristas at a Philly location refused to allow two black men because they were not paying customers.

The Starbucks policy at the time prohibited non-paying customers from using their restrooms.

Two black men, Rashon Nelson and Donte Robinson, sat inside a Starbucks in Philly while waiting for a friend to arrive.

A Starbucks employee denied one of the black men use of the restroom since he was not a paying customer.

After things escalated and the two men refused to leave the cafe, Starbucks staff called the police.

After the two black men were arrested for ‘trespassing,’ BLM agitators showed up.

Starbucks apologized to the two black men and ordered all 175,000 employees to undergo racial bias training, opening up their bathrooms to everyone.

As a result of the new policy, Starbucks employees began finding syringes, drug baggies, and blood in the bathrooms.

Starbucks manager Shannon Phillips was fired as a result of being white, and even though she wasn’t at the Philly branch when the incident happened.

On Wednesday, a judge ordered Starbucks to pay Phillips an additional $2,736,755 in back pay.

The New York Post reported:

A white Starbucks manager who was fired after two black men were refused access to a Philadelphia store bathroom was awarded $2.7 million to cover the legal fees associated with her wrongful termination lawsuit, which already awarded her $25 million.

In an order filed in New Jersey federal court on Wednesday, a judge said Starbucks would have to pay Shannon Phillips — a regional manager who oversaw several Starbucks locations across New Jersey and Pennsylvania — $2.7 million.

The court filing is the latest in Phillips’ case with the coffeehouse chain, which began back in 2018 when Phillips claimed she was used as a “scapegoat” as Starbucks found itself as the center of a racial firestorm.

About $2.6 million of the sum will cover Phillips’ back and front pay damages, the court papers said, which is typical in wrongful termination cases where workers cannot be rehired by a company to receive wages.

The remaining $66,000 is intended to cover her tax gross-up damages, which are intended to offset the taxes Phillips will have to pay on the award.

The seven-figure total is part of a “court-determined economic loss and attorneys’ fee award,” US District Court Judge Joel Slomsky wrote in the decision.

Starbucks has since filed an opposition to the latest order that requires them to dish out another $2.7 million, arguing that Mattiacci’s legal fees for claiming to work nearly 400 hours on this case are “excessive.”
