Transgender US Department of Health and Human Services Assistant Secretary Rachel Levine argues that children should not wait until they reach 18 to undergo gender transition procedures because they might be going through the “wrong puberty.”
Levine, who is a biological male, made the remarks during an ABC Nightline segment called “Identity Denied: Trans in America.”
The episode was focused on teenagers having trouble identifying with their biological gender as over 20 states have passed laws designed to cross-sex hormones, body-altering surgeries, and puberty blockers for minors.
“Adolescence is hard, and puberty is hard,” Levine said.
“What if you’re going through the wrong puberty?” Rachel Levine asked.
“What if you inside feel that you are female, but now you’re going through a male puberty?”
Levine believes that “gender-affirming care” for youth is “evidence-based,” and Laos claims it serves as a form of “mental healthcare” and “suicide prevention care.”

Levine also said pre-pubertal children are not undergoing medical interventions to change their sex but suggested therapy can help them “explore” their gender identity.
Following the interview thanked the news outlet for discussing the “medically harmful” and “unscientific” bans on minors undergoing medical interventions.
In the US, several de transitioners have spoken out against the permanent changes made to their bodies, expressing regret.
A prominent voice for detransitioners, Chloe Cole, filed a lawsuit against the Kaiser Foundation Hospitals, the Permanente Medical Group, and affiliated health professionals earlier this year.
Cole said her desire to identify as a boy was encouraged by content that she had viewed online.
As The Christian Post noted, the lawsuit highlighted the various mental health conditions Cole suffered from at the time, including anxiety, depression, and body dysmorphia, in addition to several learning disabilities. After undergoing “gender dysphoria treatment” and a double mastectomy, the complaint stated that Cole began to suffer from suicidal thoughts.
According to the filing, Cole now has “deep physical and emotional wounds, severe regrets, and distrust of the medical system.”
The complaint also asserted that Cole’s state of mind meant she “needed love, care, attention, and regular weekly psychotherapy, not cross-sex hormones and mutilating surgery.”
