New York Attorney General Letitia James warned former President Donald Trump she would seize his assets if he was unable to pay the $354 million fine in his civil fraud case.
James told ABC News:
“If he does not have funds to pay off the judgment, then we will seek judgment enforcement mechanisms in court, and we will ask the judge to seize his assets.”
Trump was fined $354.8 million and a further $100 million in pre-judgment interest after Manhattan Supreme Court Judge Arthur Engoron ruled he had inflated his net worth in order to get more favorable loan terms.
While Trump said he would appeal the ruling, he would still have to pay the fine as a bond to New York State before he could appeal.
When James was asked about the former president’s defense that the banks were paid back for all loans and there were no victims in the case, she said:
“financial frauds are not victimless crimes,” but did not name any victims and instead said the fraud was “massive.”
“He engaged in this massive amount of fraud.”
“It wasn’t just a simple mistake, a slight oversight; the variations are wildly exaggerated, and the extent of the fraud was staggering,” she argued.
James then floated a hypothetical situation, saying:
“If average New Yorkers went into a bank and submitted false documents, the government would throw the book at them, and the same should be true for former presidents.”
James added she was eyeing Trump’s building on 40 Wall Street, known as the “Trump building.”
“We are prepared to make sure that the judgment is paid to New Yorkers, and yes, I look at 40 Wall Street each and every day,” she said.
She also dismissed Trump’s claim that businesses would leave New York over the case.
“Last I checked, tourism is up. Wall Street is doing just fine,” she said.
James went on to gloat about E. Jean Carroll, and embattled Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis’s cases against Trump,
“Someone once told me if you want something done, give it to a woman,” she said.
Earlier this week, Trump-supporting Truck drivers announced they would no longer be driving to New York City after the former president was fined in a civil fraud judgment for more than $350 million.
Trump was barred from operating his business in New York for three years after he was found liable for more than $350 million in damages in a civil fraud case.
On Friday, New York Judge Arthur Engoron handed down the ruling, which stemmed from James’ lawsuit that accused Trump of inflating his assets and committing fraud.
In protest against the ruling, pro-Trump truck drivers across the country are hitting back.
As a result, many pro-Trump truck drivers across the country have not taken the ruling lightly.
“I’m just one of the many millions of Truckers who believe in God and love this Country,” a trucker known as “Chicago Ray” wrote on X, formerly Twitter.
