As Chicago continues to crumble under rampant crime and violence, the City Council approved $51 million in aid for illegals.
The vote, which passed with 34 voting yes and 13 voting no, will allow funds to cover staffing, food, and other resources for illegal immigrants in the city.
Despite the Council ultimately approving the expenditure, Chicago residents expressed outrage on how the city handles the crisis brought on by Joe Biden’s disastrous border policy.
Ald. David Moore of the 17th Ward voted to reject the funding, saying:
“If there’s enough to go around, then let’s pass an ordinance where we see the ‘enough.”
Moore pushed for money to be spent on Chicago residents like those in his district, instead of aid for illegals.
As NBC Chicago reported:
“The Chicago City Council voted in favor of passing a $51 million budget amendment on Wednesday that aims to address the needs of migrants and asylum seekers in Chicago.
The money originates from surplus funding, with the chamber voting 34-13 in the measure’s favor.
The amendment passed just days after the city moved 300 migrants into temporary housing at Wilbur Wright College in Chicago’s Dunning neighborhood, with a heated community meeting preceding the move.“
“I think it’s a really unfortunate situation for everybody,” said 33rd Ward Alderwoman Rossana Rodriguez-Sanchez.
“These migrants didn’t ask to come to Chicago, and I think Chicago has established itself as a sanctuary city, and it’s our responsibility to make sure the people who are arriving here with nothing have at least some basic protection.”
WBEZ reports:
The city has warned it’s out of money and space to aid the roughly 10,000 asylum-seekers who have arrived in the city since last August. Over 4,400 are currently living in 11 temporary city-run shelters and respite centers that include former hotels and park field houses, with 610 awaiting housing in police station lobbies, according to a city spokesman.
The funding comes from a 2021 budget surplus that was set aside for “unanticipated emergencies,” according to the city’s budget office. But it’s only a stopgap. City officials previously warned the $51 million will only be enough to last through the end of June, and the city has received just a small fraction of the tens of millions in state and federal funding it’s requested.
“We’re going to continue to have these discussions because these buses ain’t stopping,” Ald. Gilbert Villegas, 36th Ward, said, referring to the buses of asylum-seekers Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has sent to the city.
The $51 million is in addition to the Illinois state budget, which included $42.5 million targeted for illegals for shelter, translation services, and legal representation.
