Chicago inmates are claiming prison guards are pressuring them to illegally voting in the city’s mayoral election, which could help propel Mayor Lori Lightfoot back into office.
The Chicago inmates, who range from murderers and rapists, claim guards at Cook County Jail were pressuring them into illegally voting, despite them being registered in a different jurisdiction.
The inmates also claimed the guards were receiving orders from higher up, and were ‘just doing what I’m told.’
The news comes amid fears of ballot harvesting, as the jail was an ‘ideal environment’ because there are no election observers or cameras.
Moreover, it could also propel Lori Lightfoot back into office despite her dwindling popularity, with 13 percent in the polls.
One inmate told The Daily Mail the guards are not bothered about them breaking the law.
He said: “I asked him [the guard], ‘Did you ask people first if they’re registered to vote?’ And he said ‘no.”
“I said but you should because if I’m registered to vote somewhere else like I am, you are asking me and enticing me to vote even though I’m registered somewhere else and that’s a felony. I can’t be voting in two different jurisdictions,” he said.
He later claimed another guard told him he was “just doing what I’m told.”
Another inmate said 21 of the 48 inmates in his Division 11 had already voted, but none were asked if they were registered or eligible to vote.
“They just say who wants to vote? Line up to vote,” he said.
Ideal environment for ballot harvesting
“Cameras inside the Jail notoriously don’t work. There aren’t any election observers. If an inmate complains, who would believe them? So, if you wanted to manipulate a ballot, who would know?” one insider also claimed.
Meanwhile, Lightfoot has been blasted for blaming her abysmal reelection prospects on being a black woman in power.
“I’m a Black woman and, let’s not forget, some folks frankly don’t support us in leadership roles,” Lightfoot told The New Yorker.
