The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation paid roughly $23 million in grants to government organizations in China during its reporting period, tax documents show.
The Gates nonprofit listed grants to over 20 different entities in China, including Chinese government agencies.
The payments to China were labeled “foreign government” on the Gates Foundation tax forms.
Of those grants, the majority were for public health research and analysis projects, including diseases and vaccine delivery.
Recipients included:
The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs of the People’s Republic of China
The Chinese Academy of Sciences
The Chinese National Health Commission
The Ministry of Science and Technology of the People’s Republic of China.
The Gates Foundation paid the aforementioned Chinese entities $11.3 million.
A number of the entities listed report to China’s State Council, the “executive body of the supreme organ of state power,” composed of members of the Chinese Communist Party.
The Bill Gates Foundation also funded Chinese universities, regularly performing defense work for the Chinese military.
The Western Journal noted that “Peking University, Tsinghua University, and Shanghai Jiao Tong University engage in defense research, which is overseen by China’s State Administration of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense, according to the Australian Strategic Policy Institute.“
Tax filings show the Gates Foundation plowed $100,000 into the China Ministry of Science and Technology for “global health” awareness and analysis.
The Ministry of Science and Technology is involved with the Chinese government’s “863 Program,” which “provides funding and guidance for efforts to clandestinely acquire U.S. technology and sensitive economic information,” according to the U.S. Director of National Intelligence.
Gates is known to be friendly toward China.
Last year, Chinese President Xi Jinping called Gates an “old friend,” while the Microsoft founder said “China’s rise” is “a huge win for the world,” Fox News reported.
