France’s terrorism police arrested a teenager who was allegedly planning a deadly suicide bombing attack at the upcoming Olympic Games in Paris this summer.
“Anti-terrorism police” arrested a 16-year-old boy after he revealed plans to commit a suicide attack at the Paris Games, Sky News reported.
“He was arrested after he publicly announced on social media that he planned to create an explosive belt to become a martyr,” a French official told said.
The teenager was arrested at his home after posts were discovered on Telegram and reported to the authorities.
Following a search of the teen’s home, police found handwritten notes that declared his support for the Islamic State.
The Paris Games, which is set to begin on July 26, could be scaled down if there are serious security risks.
The news comes just days after a man in France was arrested for kidnapping and raping a Jewish French woman to “avenge Palestine.”
According to French publication Le Parisien, police arrested the 32-year-old suspect on charges of religiously-motivated death threats and use of narcotics, The Jerusalem Post reported.
Prosecutors believe that a kidnapping charge is likely, and they are continuing to investigate the rape allegations.
The suspect allegedly texted the woman’s mother, writing:
“Good luck, you will never find your daughter again, you will never see her again, I will prostitute your daughter.”
Le Parisien reported he allegedly said in a text message that he wanted to “avenge Palestine,”
Police used forensic investigators to geolocate the approximate location of the woman’s phone.
The suspect acknowledged the death threats but claimed that they were just “provocations,” BFMTV reported.
The man now awaits his trial, which is set to start in several weeks.
Following the deadly October 7 terrorist attack against Israel, France has seen an increase in anti-Semitism.
Late last year, a Jewish woman was rushed to the hospital in Lyon after being stabbed by a man in her home and painted a swastika on her door.
